Pleasure craft operator card

Since 1999 it has become necessary to posess a pleasure craft operator card when using a boat of more than four metres in length.

The deadline for completing the course is September 2009. The Safe Boater Program as it is called was established to high light the

necessity of standards and abilities onboard.

There are over two hundred Safer Boating representatives and test centres in Canada. It is also possible to complete the academic

sections on line. This lowers the administrative charges.
Once certificates have been attained, discounts across a  range of sailing goods and services are available.

Proof of completion needs to be shown if a person falls in to one of the two categories below:

1) If a person operates a pleasure craft fitted with a motor and if that first was born after 1st April 1983

2) If a person operates a pleasure craft that is under four metres long and is fitted with an engine – regardless of age.

The test is based on a publication called Safe Boating Guide. A score of 75% is required in order to gain the card.

As the test can be taken from all parts of the guide, the questions are varied. The incentive to achieve the test are lowered prices on a range of boating products and the cut off date of 15th September 2009
