Why Get A Boating License?
Responsibility
Being on the water requires responsibility which is represented through a boating
license. The US Coast Guard spends a considerable amount of time and effort
reinforcing the message. Each state was laws to help spread the load to individuals
and owners. Whether your water skiing, kayaking, or yachting, being on the water in
any pleasure craft can be dangerous. Unexpected, certainly. The weather can change
in a matter or minutes. Wind, rain, tides or undercurrent? They can all become adverse.
The laws are in place to minimize risk.
Statistics
Let’s take a quick look at some recent Coast Guard statistics:
· 20% of all accidents occurred due to alcohol consumption
· Collisions account for most accidents
· The typical scenario of a person who is involved in an accident is a male in the early afternoon in a boat under 20 foot, without a personal flotation device
· Only 14% of accidents occurred where people involved had a boating licence
Most accidents are preventable! Some points to take away:
· Wear a life jacket!
· Don’t drink and drive!
· Take a safety course!
· Get your free Vessel Safety Check (VSC)
So the boating licence and knowledge is all about safety. In the scheme of things if
you adhere to the code of conduct and keep yourself up to date then in all likliehood
you will have many years of fun on the water, for which ever hobby you choose to pursue.
